Summary
Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis System (BMED) is a technology used for the separation and purification of various electrolyte solutions. It involves the use of a bipolar membrane, which is a specialized membrane that consists of an anion exchange layer and a cation exchange layer.
In BMED, an electric potential difference is applied across the bipolar membrane, causing the migration of ions in the solution towards their respective charge-selective layers. This process enables the separation of ions into two different streams: the anolyte and the catholyte.
Bipolar Electrodialysis uses the basics of electrodialysis but introduces a bipolar membrane which splits water into H+ and OH- within an electrodialysis stack. The application is wide, for example: Acid Recovery: In industries where acid solutions are used, such as metal plating or chemical manufacturing, BED can be applied to recover and regenerate the acid from spent solutions. The bipolar membrane enables the selective transport of acidic ions while blocking other unwanted species, allowing for efficient acid recovery. Water Treatment: BED has potential applications in water treatment processes to remove specific ions or contaminants. It can be used to separate and concentrate certain ions, such as heavy metals or toxic compounds, from wastewater or industrial effluents. Resource Recovery: BED can facilitate the recovery and recycling of valuable resources from various waste streams.
