A CO laser is a laser that uses carbon monoxide gas as an active medium to produce carbon monoxide laser light. In a carbon monoxide laser, the carbon monoxide gas is excited, and its atoms or molecules transfer to the excited state. When they return from the excited state to the ground state, they release laser photons, producing a high-energy, monochromatic laser beam. These laser beams usually operate in the mid-infrared band, with a wavelength of about 5 microns.
