Abstract
Summary
At the core of every DLP chipset is an array of highly reflective aluminum micromirrors, which is known as digital micromirror devices (DMD). DMD is an electronic input/optical output micro-electromechanical system (MEMS), which allows developers to perform high-speed, efficient and reliable spatial light modulation.
Using TI's semiconductor technology, each DMD contains up to 2 million independently controlled micromirrors (built on corresponding CMOS memory cells). During operation, the DMD controller loads a "1" or a "0" for each basic storage unit. Next, a mirror reset pulse is applied, which causes each micromirror to deviate electrostatically by approximately one hinge, thereby achieving a corresponding +/-12° state. Due to the resistance of the two spring thimble and the physical stop, the deviation angle of these two effective states is repeatable. In a projection system, the +12° state corresponds to "on" pixels, and the -12° state corresponds to "off" pixels. Grayscale graphics are created by programming the on/off duty cycle of each lens, and multiple light sources can be multiplexed to create RGB full-color images.
