Abstract
Summary
Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EPROM) is a type of non-volatile memory that retains data when the power supply is turned off. It allows for data to be programmed and erased multiple times.
EPROM can be programmed by injecting charge into a floating gate within the memory cell using a higher voltage than normally used in digital circuits. The stored data in an EPROM chip can be erased by exposing it to strong ultraviolet (UV) light for a specific period. This process removes the charge from the floating gate, resetting the memory cells to their initial state. EPROM retains its data without a continuous power supply, making it suitable for applications where data persistence is essential. Unlike PROM (Programmable Read-Only Memory), which can be programmed only once, EPROM can be erased and reprogrammed multiple times, although it has a finite number of erase-write cycles.
EPROM is often used in firmware storage, microcontroller programming, and situations where data might need to be updated but not frequently. It was more common before the advent of EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) and flash memory, which allow for easier and more flexible data erasure and programming.
