Abstract


Summary

The Kjeldahl apparatus is a laboratory equipment used for the determination of nitrogen content in organic compounds. It is named after Johan Kjeldahl, a Danish chemist who developed the method in the late 19th century.
The apparatus consists of a round-bottom flask, a condenser, a digestion tube, and a receiving flask. The organic sample is first digested with concentrated sulfuric acid, which converts the nitrogen present in the sample into ammonium sulfate. The digestion process involves heating the sample in the digestion tube, which is connected to the round-bottom flask containing the sulfuric acid.
During the digestion, the organic material is oxidized and the nitrogen is converted into ammonium sulfate. After digestion, the excess acid is neutralized by adding a sodium hydroxide solution. The resulting ammonium sulfate solution is then distilled using steam distillation. The distillate, which contains the ammonia released from the ammonium sulfate, is collected in the receiving flask containing a known excess of acid.
The collected ammonia is then titrated with a standardized acid solution to determine the amount of nitrogen present in the original sample. The volume of acid required for the titration is used to calculate the nitrogen content in the sample.
The Kjeldahl apparatus is widely used in various fields, including food analysis, environmental analysis, and pharmaceutical analysis, to determine the protein content in food, the nitrogen content in soil and water, and the nitrogen content in pharmaceutical compounds.
